What Indonesia's IMEI registration covers
Under Indonesian regulation, communication devices from abroad that will be used with a local Indonesian SIM card must have their IMEI, a phone's identity number, registered. That is how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the rule in its handbook of policies and guidelines for foreign missions.
In the same handbook, which is addressed to foreign missions, the Ministry does not recommend IMEI registration for short visits and suggests international roaming packages instead. The handbook does not mention eSIMs. If you plan a long stay or want a local SIM card, check the current rules with the Indonesian authorities before you go. Turkey has a device-registration rule of its own, and we describe whom Turkey's phone-registration rule covers.
All Indonesia and the Bali levy
All Indonesia, at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id, is an official website and app for reporting your arrival, including customs requirements. The Ministry of Tourism says travellers can complete it up to 3 days before they arrive.
Bali adds a step of its own. The provincial government charges international tourists a levy, paid online through the Love Bali website or app with your name, passport number and arrival date, and the voucher comes by email. It is a Bali rule under a provincial regulation, not an Indonesia-wide one.
Both are online steps, so keep the arrival record and the levy email on your phone rather than hunting for Wi-Fi in the arrival hall. For charging, sockets are types C and F, on 230 V at 50 Hz.
Plans for Indonesia and the stopovers around it
Local plans cover Indonesia only, for a holiday that does not leave the country.
If your trip includes a stopover on the way to Bali, regional plans that include Indonesia also cover Singapore and Malaysia, as well as Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Daily plans set an allowance for every day of the trip instead of one balance for the whole stay.
The “Plans at a glance” section above shows how much data each plan includes and for how long; the activation guide explains what to check before you install one.
Questions about Indonesia
Do I need to register my phone's IMEI in Indonesia?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs handbook for foreign missions says IMEI registration applies to phones from abroad that will be used with a local Indonesian SIM card, and for short visits it recommends international roaming packages instead of registration. It does not mention eSIMs, so if your case differs, check with the Indonesian authorities.
What is All Indonesia and when do I fill it in?
It is an official arrival-reporting website and app, customs requirements included. The Ministry of Tourism says travellers can complete it up to 3 days before arrival.
How do I pay the Bali tourist levy?
Online, through the Love Bali website or app of the Bali Provincial Government. You enter your name, passport number and arrival date, and the voucher is sent by email.
Does one plan cover Bali and a stopover in Singapore?
Regional plans that include Indonesia also cover Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
What plugs are used in Bali?
Indonesia, Bali included, uses plug types C and F on a 230 V, 50 Hz supply.
Before you buy
Will my phone work?
Your phone needs eSIM support and must not be carrier-locked. Most phones released after 2019 qualify.
