The apps you will use in Korea

The Korea Tourism Organization recommends Naver Maps for walking, cycling, driving and public transport routes; Papago for translation; k.ride, a mobility service exclusive to international visitors; and the official Korail website or the Korail+ app for train tickets.

Each of them needs a connection while you are out, so a phone that only goes online on Wi-Fi leaves you without directions or a translator on the street. That is the practical case for having data from the moment you land.

VISITKOREA, the Korea Tourism Organization's official site, describes an eSIM as a digital SIM you set up by scanning a QR code after buying it online, and says the roaming centres at Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae and Jeju airports offer roaming, SIM cards and rental of phones or portable Wi-Fi devices, known locally as Wi-Fi eggs.

The e-Arrival card

Korea's e-Arrival card is submitted online at e-arrivalcard.go.kr, from 72 hours before arrival up to entry inspection, and Incheon Airport lists no fee for it. According to the Ministry of Justice, a submission can be used only once, within 72 hours of submitting it.

Incheon Airport says holders of a valid K-ETA do not need to submit the card.

Free Wi-Fi, the 1330 helpline and power

VISITKOREA says free public Wi-Fi is available in most public places such as airports and subway stations, and points visitors to wififree.kr.

The 1330 Korea Travel Helpline, on +82-2-1330, gives travel help in several languages. Besides the voice line it offers a free online call and a chat, which run over your connection, so data charges may apply.

The supply is 220 V at 60 Hz, and outlets have two round holes, which take plug types C and F.

Korea alone, or part of a longer route

Local plans cover South Korea only and fit a visit that stays in the country from arrival to departure.

Regional plans that include South Korea also cover Japan and China, and further south Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Daily plans hand you the same allowance on each day of the trip.

“Plans at a glance” above lists the volumes and terms of each block; the activation guide explains what to check before installing one.
